Having HG already throws all the cards out the window in pregnancy because HG is not a normal part of pregnancy. Having a happy healthy pregnancy is the norm, However if you are suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum your pregnancy is anything but happy. More like; I want to die,
you beg to yourself for a miscarriage. If you cannot handle the pain and the sickness. (If you feel like you can not handle this mentally, please call 911 or go to the nearest hospital). If you just feel the need to talk, there is help. Having PPD/PPA/PTSD or any other form of mental illness after Hyperemesis Gravidarum is real. Please know, each of us suffer differently some symptoms can be different in each of you. If immediate family members or even you are expecting to be well and get over what you just survived, (the aftermath) for some, and you realize that you have not recovered. It is hard to comprehend. It is a very real and a harsh reality that you possibly can be sick for a very long time, it is a valid fear. You cannot snap your fingers and be well, it doesn’t work that way.
PTSD after Hyperemesis Gravidarum is real. Symptoms such as flashbacks, constantly thinking of them and replaying repeatedly in your head. If you are scared to have sex with your significant other is another example. Anytime nausea hits and you panic and have panic attacks. All of these can be a sign that medical attention is needed. It’s vivid, it’s scary and it can consume you so much that sometimes you don’t even want to get out of bed or care for your baby or even leave your home. You start questioning why you did not die and feel guilty if you thought of having a therapeutic termination during HG.
Your past life that once was: being healthy, happy, full of energy and life. To then, getting pregnant and not being able to go back to your old life and missing what was once you, can hit you hard… and that’s when PPD, PTSD and PPA can take over… All are common after HG.
One of HGBDATA favorite websites on this subject is by Katherine Stone, who has changed the world on mental illness for mothers. Many sites will explain it in doctor terms, she breaks it down so you understand what you are reading. Katherine Stone’s blog explains it where you can understand the symptoms in detail. I feel her blog is so important for moms that are suffering from mental illness. If you follow Starr Andrews Strong blog or follow HGBDATA work on Facebook know that Starr is a advocate and activist for Hyperemesis Gravidarum and the aftermath. Many of these same symptoms happen after Hyperemesis Gravidarum, If you have a question, please reach out to us by email or through the contact section of this website .
You're not crazy to feel this way. By any means, do not let anyone question your feelings because they are real. It’s super important to see a doctor and start medication immediately. PPD/PPA/PTSD can get really bad and go downhill fast like a run away train .
